There are loads of clever little ‘hacks’ you can use to make technology better, easier to use, and more convenient.

Read on as we share 15 of our favourite tech and IT life hacks…

  1. Quickly reopen a closed tab – Click Command + Shift +T to reopen your most recently closed tab.
  2. Charge your iPhone faster – If you need to recharge your iPhone quickly, switch it to Airplane Mode before charging.
  3. Shrink Excel files – Reduce the size of your Excel files by saving with an .xslb extension. This will keep the size of the file down between 50-75%.
  4. Store online passwords – Use a password manager to store all your online passwords. This will save you having to write them all down.
  5. Quickly clear browsing history – If you’re a Chrome user, press cmd + ctrl + shift + del to bring up the “clear browsing data” window
  6. Excel – Select an entire row in Excel by pressing shift + space bar. Ctrl + space will select the whole column
  7. Secure your password – If you want to make your password harder to hack, use the non-English characters on your keyboard.
  8. Word – On Microsoft Word, highlight text and press shift + F3 to change your text from lower case to first letter upper case. Press again to turn all letters to upper case.
  9. Scroll down a webpage by pressing the space bar. Press shift to scroll up.
  10. Fix broken keyboard feet – Binder clips are a great replacement for broken keyboard feet
  11. Speed up your computer – Make your computer faster by deleting temporary files, especially those on your desktop.
  12. Increase laptop battery life – Research has shown that your laptop battery will last longer if you charge it up to 80% instead of 100%.
  13. Check if you’ve been hacked – Have I Been Pwned? (HIBP) is a website that allows you to check if your personal data has been compromised by a data breach.
  14. Powerpoint – If you save your Powerpoint presentation in .PPS instead of .PPT, your file goes into slideshow mode when you open it.
  15. Check tech company status pages – Many tech companies have a status page that lets you know of their services are down. For instance, here are the links to go to for the status pages for Apple and Facebook.
